Ponza, Palmarola and Ventotene — wild oases in the Lazio Tyrrhenian.
Overview
The Pontine Islands are the least known and most surprising destinations in the Tyrrhenian. Ponza's coloured houses descend to the port like a Greek amphitheatre — the coves of Chiaia di Luna and the Piscina Naturale are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Palmarola is deserted, the 'Lampedusa of the north'. Ventotene, once a place of exile, is today a protected marine reserve.
Where to dine
Ponza's most storied address — lobster, scorpionfish, linguine all'astice. Terrace on the water.
Authentic Pontine cooking — octopus alla ponzese, octopus salad, fried paranza.
Two tables on the Roman island's port — the freshest fish, local Moscato di Ventotene.
Family cooking; book weeks ahead in August — the stuff of legend.
Aperitivo on the mole watching the ferries — Pontine lemon granita and bruschette.
What to do
A natural sea pool formed by volcanic rock — sheltered snorkelling and swimming.
The island's loveliest cove — white calcarenite and emerald-green water.
An uninhabited island rated among Europe's ten most beautiful — boat only, no facilities.
A Roman necropolis cut into the tufa — Augustan era, original Latin inscriptions.
An 800m moonlit cliff reachable only by sea — archaeology and wild nature.
