Elba, Giglio, Giannutri — the Tuscan islands, far from the crowds.
Overview
The Tuscan Archipelago is made of seven islands. Elba is the largest, with the beaches of Cavoli and the mines of Rio Marina. Giglio has a fortified medieval centre and crystalline water. Giannutri is almost uninhabited — just ten permanent dwellings. The National Marine Park protects seabeds rich in grouper and coral.
Where to dine
Views over the bay of Marina di Campo; Elban cooking from local produce.
In a medieval village — Maremma-style boar, pappardelle with hare ragù.
Fresh fish cooked simply — ideal after a day on the water.
A wine bar with a kitchen on the port — Tuscan wines and dusk aperitivi.
Pair with a Maremma stop — boar and Maremma pecorino.
What to do
Sea only — a marine cave of stalactite formations. Very warm water in summer.
A Medici fortress with 360° views over Elba — Napoleon's home in exile.
Roman wrecks, red coral and giant grouper — among the best dive sites in the Tyrrhenian.
Cross the island north to south — three hours of wild Maremma panoramas.
Extraordinary geology — Elba's mines yielded iron from Etruscan times.
