Day charter — Out after breakfast, back before dinner — the coast as it is at eight in the morning, before anyone else arrives.

The most requested charter there is, and the one most often done badly. A scheduled ferry puts you ashore at the same hour as several thousand other people. A day charter puts you in the anchorage while the ferries are still loading, and takes you round the headland before the queue has formed.

A day out runs eight to nine hours, usually nine to six, with the route set on the morning's wind rather than the night before. Lunch is either aboard or somewhere the tender can reach, and the places worth the detour need booking in season.

Most day charters go out on a motor yacht: the distances are short, the appeal is being somewhere before everyone else, and speed buys you that hour. A catamaran suits a group that would rather swim than cover ground.

Who this suits

  • Groups of six to twelve
  • A first time on the water
  • Anyone with one free day and no interest in queuing
