Italy is not one cruising ground. It is a country with two long coasts, five archipelagos and a set of islands that have almost nothing in common beyond the language spoken on them, and choosing between them matters more than choosing the boat.
The Amalfi Coast is fifty kilometres of vertical villages and is best measured in hours rather than miles. Sardinia's north-east is granite, deep water and the clearest sea in the western Mediterranean. The Aeolians are seven volcanoes, one of which erupts every twenty minutes. The Egadi are the wildest islands Italy has, and Tuscany's archipelago is the one almost nobody thinks of.
This is also where most of the fleet is based — Olbia, Salerno, Portorosa, Capo d'Orlando, Trapani — which is why the boats here are chosen for the water they sit in rather than shipped in for a season.
Practical notes
- May, June and September give the same sea as August with a fraction of the traffic
- The Amalfi Coast and Capri are day-charter country; Sardinia, the Aeolians and the Egadi reward a full week
- Crossings between archipelagos are real passages — Olbia to the Aeolians is an overnight, not an afternoon
- August fills the good anchorages by eleven in the morning, everywhere
- Restaurant tables on the Amalfi Coast are booked weeks ahead in season; give us your dates early and we hold them

Questions we are asked
- Which part of Italy should we charter in?
- The Amalfi Coast and Capri if you want villages, restaurants and short hops, and you are happy to share the water. Sardinia if you want the clearest sea and are willing to be further from a town. The Aeolians if you want something genuinely unlike anywhere else. Tell us who is coming and we will say which of the three suits — including when the answer is not the famous one.
- Can we combine two areas in one week?
- Sometimes, and often it is a mistake. The Amalfi Coast with Capri and Ischia works because everything is within two hours. Sardinia with Sicily does not: you would spend the week on passage. A week is better spent in one archipelago than crossing between two.
- Do we need a skipper, or can we take the boat ourselves?
- Most of the fleet here is offered crewed. On the smaller catamarans and monohulls a skipper is available on request, and on this coast we would recommend one regardless — the anchorages are crowded, the ferry traffic is constant, and local knowledge changes the week.
- When is the season?
- Late April to mid-October, with July and August the busiest and most expensive. June and September are the two months people who come back tend to book.
