Yacht Charter Anacapri
The upper half of Capri — quieter, higher, and the end of the island the day boats never reach.
Capri is two towns, and Anacapri is the one people miss. It sits on the western shoulder five hundred metres up, reached by a road cut into the cliff in 1874 and before that by nine hundred and twenty-one steps. It is where the island lives rather than where it performs, and Monte Solaro above it is the highest point for a hundred kilometres in any direction.
Up on the shoulder
The chairlift from Piazza Vittoria takes twelve minutes to the summit of Monte Solaro, and the view from the top runs from Ischia round to the Amalfi Coast and out to the Apennines. It is the single best hour on the island and almost nobody queues for it.
Villa San Michele was built by the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe on the site of one of Tiberius's villas, using the Roman fragments he dug up, and its loggia looks straight down onto the Marina Grande six hundred metres below.
The western coast
Below Anacapri the coast is the wild side: the Grotta Azzurra opens at the northern end, the lighthouse at Punta Carena stands on the south-western tip, and between them there is nothing but cliff.
Punta Carena has the island's best swimming from the rocks and faces west, which makes it the one place on Capri built for the end of the day rather than the middle of it.
