Aboard Crazy

The same Mangusta open hull of thirty-nine metres six, and ten guests instead of twelve. That single difference is the reason to look at her: the deck plan, the saloon and the beach area were drawn for a full boat, and here they are being used by two people fewer.

Five cabins for ten, two to a room, which divides evenly. Five couples fit the layout exactly as drawn, and so does a family travelling in pairs. There is no odd berth to allocate and no conversation on arrival about who is taking the smaller room.

Six crew for ten guests. It is a working complement rather than a lavish one, and on an open yacht that is the right balance: this is a boat where the day happens on deck and under way, not one that needs a large interior team to keep a formal service running.

The aft deck is wide and open. On this type of yacht it is the main room: no bulkhead across it, no separate saloon competing for the group, and the sea at the same level as the seating rather than two decks below it.

She is a planing hull, and speed on a yacht of this length changes the shape of a charter rather than the arrival time. A coast that would be two days of passages becomes an afternoon, and the itinerary stops being a compromise between where you want to be and how long it takes.

She was delivered by Overmarine in 2014, which puts a decade of seasons behind her. On a fast hull that is a good age: the engines and running gear have been through the summers that find every weakness, and the crew know exactly how she behaves at speed.

She is available across the Mediterranean. That is what a fast yacht is for: the basin becomes a single cruising ground rather than four separate ones, and a fortnight aboard can cross between coasts that a displacement yacht would have to choose between.

Take her if you are ten and you would rather have the space than fill the cabins. She is the same yacht as her twelve-guest sister in every respect except the one that matters most to the people aboard.
