Portisco sits at the mouth of the Cugnana gulf, halfway between Olbia and Porto Cervo, in water deep enough for anything and sheltered from every quarter. It is a marina rather than a village, and that is its use: the boats that work this coast keep to it because it is easy, close to the airport, and twenty minutes from the anchorages everyone else queues for.
Why boats use it
The gulf runs a long way inland and narrows as it goes, so the water inside stays flat whatever the strait is doing outside. The marina takes large yachts, has full technical services, and the approach is straightforward at any hour.
Olbia airport is twenty-five minutes by road and Porto Cervo twenty by sea, which puts the transfer at one end and the Costa Smeralda at the other without either being a compromise.
What is round the corner
Cala di Volpe is twenty minutes north, Liscia Ruja and Capriccioli just beyond it, and Porto Rotondo fifteen minutes south. All of the coast's best-known anchorages are within half an hour.
Inland, the Gulf of Cugnana has oyster beds and a shoreline of cork oak and juniper — the Gallura interior begins immediately behind the marina and looks nothing like the coast.
