Aboard Beneteau First 53

The number that matters most on the First 53 is the one you cannot see. She draws two point seven five metres, a deep keel on a sixteen-metre hull, and it is no accident of construction: it is the decision that makes the rest of the boat work. A keel that deep holds the water and lets the hull keep its line to windward instead of sliding sideways, which is most of what people mean when they say a yacht sails well.

The beam agrees with the keel. Four point eight metres across sixteen point two of length is narrow by current standards, and a narrow hull passes through a sea rather than slamming over it. This is a yacht that grows quieter as the breeze builds, not busier. The same figure sets a limit worth knowing before the week is planned. Two point seven five metres wants water beneath it, so the shallowest corner of a bay belongs to other boats and the tender covers the last stretch of the way in.

Bénéteau's performance flagship carries twin helms, one on each side of a teak cockpit, so whoever is steering sits to windward with a clear view of the sail and the leeward bow. That is a racing arrangement borrowed for cruising, and it turns the leg between two anchorages into the part of the day worth staying on deck for.

Below, three cabins take six guests, with two heads between them. The layout suits three couples, or a family of five or six who sail together and want the accommodation finished properly rather than merely counted. Delivered in 2023.

There is no permanent crew. Take her bareboat if you have the miles behind you, or arrange a skipper on request and treat the helm as something to share rather than to manage. She lies at Olbia, in Gallura, the largest base in this fleet, twenty minutes from the airport, which on a yacht of this kind matters more than it sounds: the interval between landing and being under sail fits inside one afternoon.

The First 53 is for the charterer who looks at the sail plan before the deck plan. The comfort below is real, but it has been arranged around the sailing rather than in place of it.
