Serenity
Dutch build quality at forty-two metres
Aboard Serenity
Forty-one metres eight, built by Moonen in the Netherlands. Dutch construction is a specific thing rather than a compliment: it means a yard where the standard is set by the engineering rather than by the styling, and where the finish is judged by what is behind the panel as well as on it.
The quality shows up as silence. Noise and vibration on this yacht are exceptionally low, which is the difference between a yacht you can sleep on while it is moving and one where the overnight passage is something the guests are aware of from the moment it starts.
Ten guests across five cabins, two to a room. It is a low number for forty-two metres and the space per person is correspondingly high: cabins that are rooms, a saloon that never fills, and no need to ration deck space between the group at any point in the day.
Eight crew for those ten. Close to one each, and enough that the meals, the tenders, the cabins and the deck are all being handled at once rather than in sequence. It is the ratio that decides whether service is something you notice or something you simply live inside.
The interior is understated and led by timber. There is no attempt to impress on arrival: warm materials, restrained detailing, rooms that are pleasant to be in for two weeks rather than striking for ten minutes. It is a Dutch preference and it wears extremely well.
Moonen build a particular kind of yacht and have never chased size. What they make instead is a hull that behaves, a quiet engine room and an interior that does not date, and those three qualities are the whole reason to choose this yacht over a flashier one of the same length.
She is available across the Mediterranean. For a yacht of this character, the long unhurried itinerary is the one that suits: quiet passages, small harbours, and a group of ten who would rather the yacht disappeared into the background of the holiday.
Take her if what you want is not to be impressed. There are more dramatic yachts of this length in this fleet, and there is nothing here that will pass two weeks more quietly, more comfortably or with less to think about.
