Yacht charter at Ibiza and Formentera — the anchorages, and the quiet half of the island.
Ibiza has a reputation that its own northern half does not deserve, and a yacht is the only practical way to have both versions of the island in the same day. Fifteen minutes separates the south-west coast everyone has heard of from pine forest and empty coves where nothing is happening at all.
Ibiza, both of them
The south-west is the island of the reputation: Cala Bassa, Cala Conta, the sunset at Es Vedrà — a four-hundred-metre limestone monolith that has been drawing people for a very long time.
The north is Portinatx, Benirràs and the coves below Sant Joan: pine down to the water, clear sea, and almost nobody. Both are reachable in a morning.
Go ashore in the evening for Dalt Vila, the walled UNESCO old town above the port, which is better after dark and better on foot.
Formentera, twenty minutes south
Formentera has the clearest water in the western Mediterranean and almost nothing built on it. Ses Illetes is the beach everyone photographs; Juan y Andrea sends a dinghy out to collect you from the anchorage.
The seagrass meadows here are a protected habitat, which is why anchoring is regulated and why a properly briefed captain uses the marked buoy fields rather than dropping where he likes.

- Formentera is twenty minutes south; Mallorca two to three hours north-east
- Posidonia seagrass is legally protected — anchoring on it carries real fines
- Berths in Ibiza and Formentera in August are booked months ahead
- Catamarans suit these islands: shallow draught for the coves, space for long lunches
- May, June and September are the months; July and August are full and hot

- Easily — it is about twenty minutes and the two are routinely combined. Most charters anchor off Ses Illetes for lunch and swimming.
- Do we need a berth, or can we anchor?
- Anchoring is normal and often better, but the Balearics protect posidonia seagrass strictly. Your captain will use the marked buoy fields; fines for anchoring on the meadows are substantial.
- Is Ibiza only about the nightlife?
- No, and that is exactly why a yacht helps. The northern half of the island is pine forest and empty coves, fifteen minutes from the coast everyone has heard of.
