The Balearics, Palma to Ibiza
Seven nights from Palma — the Tramuntana coast, Cabrera, Formentera and Ibiza, with two very different islands in one week.
7 nights · Palma de Mallorca to Ibiza
Mallorca and Ibiza get talked about as one destination and they are nothing alike. Mallorca has a mountain range falling into the sea and coves you reach on foot or not at all; Ibiza has the sunsets and the reputation. A week that takes both, in that order, ends better than one that does it the other way round.
The route, day by day
Day 1
Palma de Mallorca
Board and run west along the bay. The cathedral from the water is the view the island is built on, and it is best seen leaving rather than arriving.
Day 2
Sa Dragonera
The uninhabited island off Mallorca's western tip — a nature reserve, lizards found nowhere else, and an anchorage under cliffs with nothing built on them.
Day 3
Sóller
North along the Tramuntana, where the mountains come down to the water in a way nobody expects from Mallorca. A harbour, a tram to the town, and terraced orange groves behind.
Day 4
Cabrera
South-east to the archipelago that is a national park: entry is capped and permitted, the water is the clearest in the Balearics, and there is nothing ashore but a castle.
Day 5
Formentera
West across to the sandbanks. Ses Illetes is the beach everyone photographs and it earns it, but the anchorage off Espalmador is the one to take.
Day 6
Espalmador
A second night on the sandbanks — the shallow channel between the islands holds turquoise water over white sand, and the crossing to Ibiza is twenty minutes when you want it.
Day 7
Ibiza
In past Es Vedrà, the rock stack off the south-west coast that is the island's actual landmark, and a last night in the old town above the harbour.
Worth knowing
- Cabrera is a national park: mooring buoys are limited and permitted in advance, and the crew arrange it
- The Tramuntana coast is exposed to the north — the northern leg follows the forecast rather than the plan
- Three yachts are based in the Balearics; the rest are positioned from the western Mediterranean
- Palma and Ibiza both have airports, which makes the one-way version of this week easy
- Formentera's anchorages are protected posidonia: anchoring is restricted and enforced, and the crew know where
