Almost every Greek charter begins within an hour of Athens, and most of them treat the city as an airport with ruins attached. It is worth a day: the Acropolis museum alone justifies it, and the coast south of the city — the Athens Riviera — has beaches, marinas and the Temple of Poseidon standing on the headland you round on the way out.
Where the boats are
Alimos is the largest marina in Greece and the usual embarkation point, twenty minutes from the airport by road. Flisvos, closer to the city, takes larger yachts. Both sit on the Riviera south of the centre with the Saronic islands an hour or two ahead.
From either, Aegina is under two hours, Hydra about four, and the Cyclades open up to the south-east once you round Cape Sounion.
Sounion, and the city behind
The Temple of Poseidon has stood on the cape at the southern tip of Attica since 444 BC, and it is the last thing you see leaving and the first coming back. Byron carved his name into one of the columns, which was vandalism and is now an exhibit.
In the city, the Acropolis museum was built to hold what is there and what is not — the empty spaces for the sculptures in London are deliberate and are the most eloquent thing in it.
