Yacht Charter Folegandros
A Chora on the lip of a two-hundred-metre cliff, and about seven hundred people.
Folegandros is a long ridge of rock between Milos and Santorini with almost no flat ground, and its Chora sits right on the edge of a cliff two hundred metres above the sea. There is no airport, the population is around seven hundred, and the island has stayed quiet largely because it never had room to be anything else.
The Chora and the church
The Chora is built round four linked squares with a medieval kastro at its heart — houses whose outer walls formed the defensive wall, which is why the whole thing turns its back on the drop. Nothing motorised gets in.
Above it, Panagia is reached by a wide zigzag path lit at night, about fifteen minutes up. The church is whitewashed and plain and the view from the terrace runs the length of the island.
The coast
Karavostasi is the port, in a small bay on the east side. Katergo, a beach of grey pebbles between two headlands, has no road to it and is reached from the water — which is the usual arrangement here.
Chrysospilia, the golden cave, is in the cliff below the Chora and holds hundreds of names carved by young Athenians in the fourth century BC. Milos is two hours north-west, Santorini two hours east.
