Yacht Charter Gibraltar
A limestone rock four hundred metres high at the gate of the Mediterranean, with Africa fourteen miles across.
Gibraltar is six and a half square kilometres of limestone standing at the point where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, with Morocco visible fourteen miles across the strait. It has been fortified by Moors, Spaniards and the British in turn, and the tunnels cut through the inside of the Rock run to more than fifty kilometres — longer than the roads on the surface.
The Rock
The upper Rock is a nature reserve with the only wild monkeys in Europe on it, and the cable car takes six minutes to the top. From the summit you see two continents, two seas and three countries, which is not a claim many places can make.
St Michael's Cave is a cathedral-sized chamber inside the limestone, now used as a concert hall; the Great Siege Tunnels were cut by hand through solid rock in the 1780s to mount guns on the north face.
The strait
The strait is fourteen miles across at its narrowest and carries the whole exchange of water between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, which means current — the surface flows east, the deep water flows west, and the crew will time the passage rather than fight it.
It is also one of the great migration routes: storks, raptors and orca all pass through, and dolphins are resident in the bay year-round.
