A volcanic island of white rock and mining colours, with a coast that changes shade every mile.
Milos is a collapsed volcano and it shows in everything: the rock is white, red, ochre and black depending where you are, the beaches are made of whatever was quarried above them, and the whole southern coast is cut into shapes that look engineered. The Venus de Milo was dug out of a field here in 1820 and went to Paris; the island has been asking for it back ever since.
The white coast
Sarakiniko on the north shore is a lunar sheet of white volcanic rock, wind-smoothed into curves with a channel of blue running through it, and it is unlike anything else in the Aegean. There is no shade at all, which is the one thing nobody mentions.
Kleftiko on the south-west is a set of white stacks and arches standing in clear water, reachable only from the sea and the reason boats come to Milos at all.
Colour and fishing villages
Klima and Mandrakia are syrmata villages: fishermen's boathouses cut into the rock at the waterline with doors painted in every colour, the boat kept downstairs and the family above.
Firiplaka and Tsigrado on the south coast have cliffs banded in mineral colour above the sand; Papafragas is a slot in the rock with a beach at the bottom that only opens to the sea.
Practical notes
- Kleftiko is reachable only from the sea, and is the reason boats come to Milos
- Sarakiniko has no shade at all: it is a morning or an evening, not a middle of the day
- The syrmata villages are boathouses at the waterline — the boat downstairs, the family above
- Santorini is about four hours south-east; Athens is a long day north
