The whole argument for chartering this coast rather than driving it is timing. Every place on this route is somewhere you could reach by ferry and by road, and every one of them is a different place at eight in the morning than at noon. The route below is built around that hour, not around distance — the total sailing is small enough that a slower week is always an option.
The route, day by day
Day 1
Salerno
Board in the afternoon, provision, and take the short leg west as the light drops. The first night is quiet on purpose: nobody enjoys a long passage on the day they land.
Day 2
Amalfi
Ashore early for the cathedral steps and the paper mills up the valley, back aboard before the coaches arrive. Afternoon at anchor off the Duoglio or the Santa Croce beaches.
Day 3
Positano
Anchor off and go in by tender — the town is a staircase and it is best walked downhill. Lunch at Da Adolfo up the coast if it can be booked; it is reachable only by boat.
Day 4
Capri
Round the Faraglioni before the hydrofoils start, then the Grotta Azzurra while the queue is still forming. Night on the Marina Piccola side or in the marina if the forecast turns.
Day 5
Nerano
Across to the Sorrento peninsula for the bay at Ieranto and lunch at Marina del Cantone. This is the day people remember, and it is the one with the least sailing in it.
Day 6
Ischia
North to the largest of the bay islands: thermal water at Sorgeto, the Aragonese castle on its islet, and a working town underneath the resort.
Day 7
Procida
An hour from Ischia and a different century — Corricella harbour is the one that photographs itself. Then the run back down the coast to Salerno.
Worth knowing
- Total sailing is modest: no leg on this route is longer than about three hours
- The order is set by the hour, not the distance — every stop is timed to arrive before the ferries
- A motor yacht buys the mornings; a catamaran buys the afternoons at anchor. Both work here
- Restaurants reachable only by sea — Da Adolfo, Marina del Cantone — need booking in season
- June and September give the same coast with a fraction of the traffic
